MX5 Owners Club.

As soon as I had purchased AGH!, I joined the MX5 Owners Club. This has proved to be well worth the outlay as I have used the Forums extensively. Not only is the website excellent, I have answered many questions whilst trawling through the forum. It is well worth a look if you have 5 minutes to spare. The minutes tend to change to hours!

Virtual MX5

Whilst looking at the MX-5 Community website, I came across a virtual Mazda section - Have a look. It really is interesting if you have 5 minutes to spare. Don't worry if the clip does not work - it needs flash player to run. Get it here.

Video at Elvington

Whilst enjoying the thrills of flying around the track at Elvington, my other half was busy standing in the ever increasing blustry wind (and rain!) filming AGH! as it came to the slowest part of the track (just before the exit lane).

Michael Comber Racing

A big thank you to Mike at MichaelComber Racing for his assistance in advising on the preparation of AGH! in readiness for the Elvington Trackday. Following Mike's advice the car not only handled brilliantly but remained glued to the track even though at times it was raining. Anyone wanting advise on trackday preparation would be sensible to give Mike a call - he is based just outside Loughborough and can be contacted through his website - http://www.michaelcomberracing.com/ or at the link above. Thanks Mike for a job well done.

Elvington trackday (2)

Elvington Airfield nr York has probably the most generous amount of “run-off” of any circuit in the UK. It’s unlikely you’ll even reach grass in the event of getting it wrong. It consists of a soft cone circuit giving a combination of safe high-speed technical corners, The straight is long enough to be interesting but not long enough to be boring. The circuit is approx 1.8 miles in length. More details can be found at Javelin Trackdays.

Yorkshire Air Museum

The sunday of the 17th was spent at the Yorkshire Rally. AGH! had a rest whilst we examined the stalls and lines of cars. AGH! even had some admiring comments. The weather stayed fine and all had an interesting time - I nearly brought a set of TOYO tyres from MOT (not bad at £125 for 4) See more images.

Thoughts on the Track experience

Now I had always considered that all MX's were equal. After the track event I now know different. There are three different types. The first is the standard car (AGH!). The second is the standard car plus a TURBO. These look and sound the same as AGH! but tend to shoot past just when you think you have it made. The last are the type that have bolted on a SUPERCHARGER. These not only sound like a Spitfire on heat but also tend to come from nowhere and dissapear just as quick! During the afternoon I learnt to listen for the high pitched whine as the supercharged MX came near. One day!

Elvington Racetrack

After a track inspection and familiarisation run, AGH! was off at break-neck speed around the circuit. I started third on the track ( OK, I was number three to get in the queue out of 20 cars) and by the end of the first lap was last! As the laps progressed, so my times got faster so much so that I actually managed to overtake two other cars! One thing is for sure, AGH! remains glued to the tarmac. I managed 110 mph down the back straight at one point during the afternoon. Anyone contemplating changing their brake setup to the EBC disks and pads - my advise is to do it! They were brilliant and never faded during the afternoon, even though the pads only have 500 miles wear.
